Jerry Steinberg announces plans to sacrifice the red heifer. Messiah Fever spreads over the world. At Bar-Ilan's urging, Artie, Shaya, Shaya's father, David and Chickie travel to Jerusalem, to find a huge crowd gathered in the Kidron Valley beneath the Mount of Olives. In the garden of the Armenian church on the Mount of Olives - the traditional setting for red heifer sacrifice - Steinberg is building an altar according to Biblical description, as well as a wooden causeway from the church to the Golden Gate in Jerusalem's eastern wall. Shaya's father collapses when he realizes that workmen are unblocking the Golden Gate, which has been sealed for 1300 years and is prophesied to be the Messiah's entryway into Jerusalem.

"i recently added this to my aggregator, and am really enjoying the story so far. The world the author has created is one so completely alien to my experience I find myself reviewing the feed to make sure I don't miss any plot elements. Mr. Schefrin does a great job of explaining to the reader the theology involved, but you need to listen to at least a few chapters for this information. Trust me, it comes together and is explained bit by bit, but in a meter that becomes familiar the further you get into the story. I especially enjoyed the description of the polo player getting coated in manure, "... like a chocolate-covered strawberry". Great visual, that one. And I couldn't stop laughing at the prayer scene with the Goys. Hysterical! I'm sure my co-workers were convinced that I'd taken leave of my senses. Again, another winner for Aram Schefrin. Shaya runs through a manic New York shopping spree, then tells Artie that she is going back to Israel. She has realized that she can't escape from religious fanaticism, and wants to get involved in fighting it. Artie, Chickie and David go to Israel with her.

Shaya's father says the Shekhina has left Tsfat for Jerusalem. It means the Messiah is imminent - but he doesn't seem happy about it. He tells Shaya he is still being contacted by old terrorist friends.

Artie and Shaya demand again that Bar-Ilan tell them his relationship with Teddy. He insists they were only friends. He tells them they ought to leave Israel. They refuse.

The reporter goes to New York with Artie and meets a Columbia University professor named Hapsky who has been emailing Teddy. Hapsky is a conspiracy nut; he believes the American president - a born-again Christian - attacked Iraq to provoke Iraq into attacking Israel (as it had in the 1991 war), beginning the process of the End of Days. Since Iraq fell quickly and failed to attack Israel, he says the president now intends, for the same reason, to invade Syria. As Hapsky puts it: "If Jesus is going to come for you if Israel is attacked, you're going to make it happen - isn't that clear?"

An email on one of Teddy's computers says that the sender can prove that the attack on Iraq was intended to trigger the End of Days scenario. Meanwhile, NBC reports that Syria has arrested the U.S. inspectors; National Guard troops are being sent to the Iraq-Syria border, and Iran has said it was considering a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the U.S. and/or Israel. NBC shows the President at an NSC meeting; one of the participants is Mooney Brice.

When Artie returns from Israel, he finds a letter from a lawyer in Delray Beach notfying him that he is the executor of Teddy's estate - and that he and Teddy's Jamaican girl, Clarisse Ward, are the heirs. The lawyers ask him to inventory Teddy's condo, so he takes a ride to Delray Beach and finds a sad Clarisse. She offers to move in with him and do for him what she'd done for Teddy. He declines the offer, then goes through the apartment, noting everything down. He finds the key to the secret room on a keyring which had been returned to him by the burial society in Tsfat. Inside, he finds a wall of photographs of Teddy with notables and celebrities, and five computers, all still on. The first shows emails from all over the country reporting anti-Semitic incidents. The second is a log of the doing of anti-Semitic organizatons. The third carries entries from big Jewish groups. The fourth has emails from the people on Teddy's wall, and the fifth is set to the website of Mooney Brice's church. Artie brings the reporter down to look at the room. After going through Brice's website, the reporter proposes the two of them go to Brice's megachurch, north in Frostfree, Florida, to find out more about the Church of the Reborn Christ.

Artie can't sleep - so he tries to puzzle out how Asher had made the pinot grigio, when pinot grapes didn't grow in Israel. He gets an unwelcome call from his son David - they haven't spoken for years. David tells him to get a newspaper - and urges Artie to come home. Artie gets a paper. The American President has announced that the WMD that had been in Iraq before the American invasion had been moved into Syria before the war. He demands that Syria open itself to U.S. inspection, and warns that that doesn't happen, the U.S. will invade. Bar-Ilan comes to the shivah to urge Artie to go home. Reluctantly, Artie agrees. But Shaya refuses to go back to Wellington; she decides instead to visit her daughter in New York. Artie hadn't known she had a daughter; she says it was none of his business, making Artie miserable.

THE RED HEIFER AND THE THIRD TEMPLE (For readers' interest, the following report, from yesterday's London SUNDAY TELEGRAPH, is carried verbatim, despite concerns about the accuracy of the second last paragraph, and the tone throughout) The birth of a red heifer in Israel is being hailed by religious Jews as a divine sign that work can soon begin on building the Third Temple in Jerusalem. A team of rabbinical experts last week confirmed that the animal, born six months ago on a religious kibbutz near the north Israeli port of Haifa, meets the correct Biblical criteria for a genuine holy cow. According to the Book of Numbers (XIX: 2-7), the animal is needed for an ancient Jewish purification ritual. "Speak unto the children of Israel that they bring thee a red heifer without spot, wherein is no blemish, and upon which never came yoke," says the fourth book of the Old Testament, also part of Jewish holy scripture, the Torah. The heifer will be slaughtered and burned, and its ashes made into a liquid paste and used in a ceremony which religious Jews believe they must undergo before they can enter the old Temple site in Jerusalem to start building a new structure. Since Herod's Temple was destroyed by the Roman emperor Titus in AD 70, no flawless red heifer has been born within the biblical land of Israel, according to rabbinical teaching. The birth of the animal, to a black-and-white mother and a dun-coloured bull, is being hailed as a "miracle" by activists who want to rebuild the Third Temple and prepare the way for the Jewish messiah's entry to Jerusalem. The faithful will need to wait until the heifer is at least three before it can be used in a ritual sacrifice. That would enable religious Jews to start the new millennium (a Christian event, but still regarded as portentous) in a state of purity. News of the red heifer's appearance, however, will not be well received by Muslims. The site of the old Jewish temples in the Holy City is now occupied by one of Islam's holiest shrines, the Dome of the Rock. Jewish extremists want to destroy the Dome and the adjoining Al-Aqsa mosque to make way for a new temple. In 1985 a group of Jewish terrorists were jailed in Israel for planning to destroy the Dome with high explosives. But Jewish activists say they regard it as their divine mission to build a new Temple. "We have been waiting 2,000 years for a sign from God, and now he has provided us with a red heifer," said Yehudah Etzion, the ringleader of the Eighties' plot to blow up the Dome, who was present at last week's inspection of the red heifer at Kfar Hassidim. SHAYA

Shaya is a beautiful Israeli woman whom Artie first met in the days when the two of them played polo in The Hamptons. Artie is in love with her - from afar. In a polo tournament in Wellington, Shaya and another player get into a fight, and after the game Shaya is beaten senseless by the other player. Humiliated, Shaya runs home to Israel, to the house of her father, who lives in Tsfat. From there, she sends Artie an email, telling him that she is going to do the Palestinian thing - blow herself up along with the Dome of the Rock, one of the holiest Muslim shrines, which sits on Mount Mariah, where the Second Jewish Temple stood until the Romans destroyed it in 70 A.D. Artie can't understand why she would do such a thing. But after her father builds her a polo field outside Tsfat, Shaya decides that instead of blowing up the Muslim shrine, she will - on behalf of the Jews - challenge the Palestinians to a polo match. Since she is the only Israeli polo player, she asks Artie to play the game and to bring two other Jewish American players. After much internal debate, the Palestinians accept the challenge.
